QDs are minute particles or nano-particles in the
range of 2 nm to 10 nm diameter. Since their breakthrough in 1980,
quantum dots have been weathered in diverse conditions and operations,
which have resulted in the extraction of their unique properties. Due to
their controlled excitation properties and ability to reflect in three
dimensions, they can be easily tuned to provide the desired emission
wavelength just by changing their core size called as “size quantization
effect”. Their physical properties do not depend on the material from
which they are prepared but on their size. Their notable property of
absorption and transmission has evolved them as the desired material to
be used in the field of optoelectronics and biomedical applications.
One of the major segments developing in the field of
Quantum Display is QD Displays (QDD). A QD display provides better
features as compared to cathode ray tubes (CRT) and liquid crystal
displays (LCDs).This technology is similar to organic light emitting
diode (OLED) that provides more efficient displays. QDD provides 50 to
100 times better brightness in comparison with CRT display and LCD. LCD
does not produce a pure green, red, and blue color. On the other hand,
Quantum Dot Display produces pure colors.
QD LED and QDD are expected to get commercialized by
the end of 2012, as there is strong R&D is going on in this field
and solid-state lighting. However, companies have launched QD LED lamp,
but the current market for QD LED lamp and the other lighting products
is very small. QD-based lighting will be the best replacement for
currently available CFL and LED lighting, as this provides better
efficiency and high power intensity. QD solar cells and panels will be
the biggest revolution in the field of solar energy, and they are
expected to commercialize by 2014.
Healthcare industry is one of the key areas of QD
technology. There are numerous applications in biomedical and
biotechnology field that are already exposed to QD technology and hence
it is accounted for the largest percentage in QD market on the whole.
Applications in biomedical and biotechnology fields are expected to
increase as technology progresses.
The overall market for QD technology is expected to
grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% from 2012 to 2022, with healthcare
industry having the largest market share. At present, Americas are the
market leader, but by the end of 2022, APAC is estimated to take over
the first position.
