Kenya’s tourism operators relaxed following the relatively peaceful presidential elections in March 2013. In late 2007, violence in the wake of the elections severely curtailed tourism in the country until recently. The sector has recovered significantly and the outlook is now bright; leading foreign hotel groups are showing a renewed interest in establishing operations in the country and expanding existing ones.

Domestic tourist volume increased from 35.6 million trips in 2008 to 53.7 million in 2012 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.80%. Volumes are expected to expand over the forecast period at a CAGR of 4.95%. Domestic tourism demand will be stimulated by the growth of the middle class, as well as government efforts to reduce sector dependence on inbound tourists.

Since the violence-related decline of 2008, inbound tourism has recovered with positive growth rates. Inbound arrivals increased at a CAGR of 12.56, and over the forecast period, international arrivals are expected to increase at a CAGR of 5.09%.

Outbound tourism rose at a CAGR of 3.72% during the review period. A large number of Kenyan citizens traveled abroad for business purposes rather than leisure during this period. Outbound departures are set to grow at a CAGR of 3.61%, with leisure and travel departures expected to grow at a higher CAGR of 3.95%.

The aviation market in Kenya has risen from the decline recorded in 2008, as both capacity and number of seats sold increased during the review period. Kenya’s Nairobi airport is a major transit point for travelers to other East African countries, fueling growth in Kenyan aviation. The number of seats available increased at a CAGR of 8.09%, while the number of seats sold rose at a CAGR of 9.59%. With the rise of other airports in the region, such as Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa airport, Kenya‘s status as the aviation hub of East Africa is under threat.

The Kenyan hospitality industry is currently in a capacity-building phase as international hotels look to expand or build hotels in Kenya. The number of establishments increased at a CAGR of 6.73% during the review period. The hotel industry is set to witness a slight slowdown in the forecast period relative to the review period, as the number of establishments will increase at a CAGR of 2.58%. Total revenue in the review period increased at a CAGR of 20.03%, but due to competition from Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, growth in the forecast period is expected to decelerate to a CAGR of 4.41%.
